An Offer in Compromise is an agreement to settle your tax debt for less than the full amount owed. It exists because the IRS recognizes that some taxpayers genuinely cannot pay their full balance within the time the agency has to collect.
It is not a discount or a loophole. The IRS grants an offer only when your Reasonable Collection Potential — what they believe they could collect from your assets and future income — is less than what you owe. I run that calculation honestly before recommending an offer, because most taxpayers do not qualify, and promising one that will not succeed only wastes your money and time.
When an offer is the right path, I prepare a complete financial disclosure, build a defensible proposal grounded in the IRS formula, and manage every round of review. If a different resolution serves you better, I tell you so plainly and pivot to it.
Who this helps
- Taxpayers with limited assets and income that barely covers living expenses.
- People whose debt is large enough that the collection formula produces a number well below the balance.
- Those facing long-term hardship where full payment is not realistic within the collection window.
Questions about offers in compromise.
The 'pennies on the dollar' phrasing comes from advertising, not the IRS. An offer, when accepted, settles the debt for your Reasonable Collection Potential — which can be substantially less than you owe, but only when the formula supports it. I will show you the real number before you decide.
